Indomet warns of heavy downpours and the COE raises alert levels for possible floods and landslides
SANTO DOMINGO – Heavy rains will continue to affect much of the country. According to the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET), a frontal system, combined with a trough, will continue to dominate atmospheric conditions, causing moderate to heavy downpours.
According to the agency, during the morning hours the rainfall will be concentrated in provinces such as Montecristi, Puerto Plata, Espaillat, María Trinidad Sánchez and Samaná.
Indomet explained that by the afternoon, rain activity will increase in intensity and will be accompanied by thunderstorms and gusts of wind in areas such as Santiago, San Juan, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, San José de Ocoa, Elías Piña, Monte Plata and Hato Mayor.
The agency also stated that rain will return to the Atlantic coast during the evening, as well as to Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, and San Pedro de Macorís.
The National Forecast Center of Indomet reported that alert and weather warning levels remain in place due to the risk of urban flooding, river overflows, and possible landslides in the coming hours.
COE increases alert levels
Meanwhile, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported that it raised alert levels in several provinces, taking into account reports from Indomet and other technical agencies.
According to the bulletin issued by the entity, Puerto Plata and Espaillat remain on red alert, while other provinces and the National District were placed on yellow alert, including Montecristi, María Trinidad Sánchez, Hermanas Mirabal, Monseñor Nouel, Santiago, La Vega, San José de Ocoa, San Cristóbal and Santo Domingo.
Likewise, the COE indicated that San Juan, Elías Piña, Duarte, Samaná, Valverde, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, Monte Plata, Peravia and Sánchez Ramírez are under green alert
The institution recommended that the population refrain from crossing rivers, streams and ravines with high volumes of water, as well as avoid the use of swimming areas in the provinces under alert.
Restrictions on the Atlantic coast
In its report, Indomet indicated that maritime conditions along the Atlantic coast remain dangerous. Therefore, it recommended that operators of fragile, small, and medium-sized vessels remain in port from Manzanillo Bay to Cabo Engaño due to abnormal winds and swells.
Call to the population
Both Indomet and COE urged citizens to stay tuned to official bulletins and follow the guidance of civil protection agencies due to the continued rainfall.
