SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET) forecasts that rain will fall over several regions of the national territory this Monday, May 18, due to the influence of a trough, while the effects of the east/southeast wind will continue to induce cloud development generating moderate to heavy downpours, thunderstorms and gusts of wind.
According to the agency's latest report, issued at 6:00 pm yesterday, Sunday, downpours will occur in La Altagracia, Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, Greater Santo Domingo, Peravia, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, Azua, Barahona, Pedernales, San Juan, Duarte, Espaillat, María Trinidad Sánchez, Valverde, Dajabón, Puerto Plata, Monte Cristi, La Vega, Santiago and Elías Piña.
"These rains will continue through the late afternoon and extend until around midnight, and may be intense at times in some of the provinces under weather alert," the report states.
The National Forecast Center of INDOMET modifies the levels of meteorological alerts, due to the risk of urban flooding, as well as rises in rivers, streams, ravines and possible landslides.
Rainy Monday
INDOMET forecasts rain starting in the early morning hours, especially over the northeast and the Caribbean coast, including provinces such as Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Peravia, San José de Ocoa, Azua, and Barahona, among others. In the afternoon, increased cloud cover is expected, accompanied by heavy downpours, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and possible isolated hailstorms in areas of the northeast, the Cibao Valley, the Central Mountain Range, the southwest, and the border region.

Santo Domingo: Morning downpours, ranging from moderate to heavy with thunderstorms.
For Tuesday, the institute said that light to moderate showers are expected in the early morning hours in Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Barahona, and Pedernales, due to a trough and wind drift. In the afternoon, local downpours with thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected over the Central Mountain Range and some border provinces.
Hot temperatures
INDOMET stated that temperatures will remain quite hot. They recommend drinking plenty of fluids, wearing light-colored, lightweight clothing, avoiding prolonged sun exposure without proper protection, and staying in cool, well-ventilated areas.
The COE alert
The COE, Emergency Operations Center, placed seven provinces on yellow alert and maintains 12 and the National District on green alert, due to a trough at various levels of the troposphere, combined with the moisture left by a tropical wave located over Haiti, which will continue to favor cloud developments generating local downpours, possible thunderstorms and occasional gusts of wind.
