BAYAHIBE, LA ROMANA. Around 300 foreign investors participated yesterday in the Caribbean Hotel Investment Conference & Operations Summit (CHICOS) held in the Dominican Republic.

This group of hotel developers, industry suppliers, and managers of hotels located in the country and others in the region were able to appreciate the positioning of local tourism after the pandemic.

The congress highlighted that this nation not only leads the region in terms of high tourist volume and hotel occupancy, but also in the monetary income generated in this sector, which allows for hiring staff and ensuring the flow of foreign investment, according to international tourism statistics

Enrique Penson, Director of Economic Studies at the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), told Listín Diario that hotel investment in the country must be increased, given the rise in demand for hotels.

“Part of the task that the Ministry of Tourism had in bringing this conference to the country is to ensure the increase in investment; we are talking about investors from the largest hotel chains in the world,” Penson told Listín Diario.

The manager commented that many procedures have been streamlined to facilitate the investment process and allow interested parties to access data related to the sector without complications.

Penson indicated that another key attraction for doing this type of business is the law promoting Tourism Investment.

“The Dominican Republic is doing extremely well, which contrasts with the rest of the region, which is unfortunate, but when investors analyze the country they feel confident, since we have all the indicators in the green,” he noted.

stated that the hotel executives who met with the Dominican authorities expressed their excitement about what they heard in that meeting.

He said this would translate into more hotel remodeling, expansion, and construction. This group of negotiators comes mostly from the United States, Mexico, Spain, India, and other countries.

According to reports, total investment in the hotel industry is estimated to exceed US$15 billion. Furthermore, 54% of this investment is foreign, 15% is local, and 31% is a mix of both.

Abinader and Tourism:

During his visit to Bayahibe, the head of state said that with this latest project, Punta Bergantín, he seeks to make the Dominican Republic a preferred destination for tourism linked to the international film industry.

He emphasized that the country has assumed the role that corresponds to it at this time, also putting the entire machinery of the State into operation in favor of this business sector, so that they know that at all times they can count on the support of the Dominican Government.

“My commitment to you is total. And that’s how I want you to feel. The alliance between our sectors goes beyond what might be a circumstantial strategy. It is a genuine commitment to the country, to its economic and social development, to job creation, and to the strengthening of other productive sectors,” he stated in his speech.

Abinader spoke at the Caribbean Investment Conference, accompanied by the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, where he pointed out that this collaboration is a fundamental part of the Country Brand.

The CHICOS conference is taking place at the Hilton Hotel in La Romana, from yesterday until today, the 11th, bringing together more than 300 investors and hotel operators from around the world, as well as the main tourism authorities of the Caribbean.

Objective:
The meeting aims to explore the challenges, winning strategies, and opportunities of the tourism sector. The conference seeks to look to the future and create a space for promoting and attracting new investments to the region.

Strengthening tourism investment in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean will be the focus of this conference, where opportunities, incentives and the future of the sector will be discussed together.

“This year, our country comes with the best proposals to open spaces for dialogue and communication between the various investors and tourism operators from around the world, who find in the Dominican Republic a country that offers them the best opportunities to develop their ideas within the thriving national tourism industry, which is a global example of resilience, economic growth and development,” Abinader highlighted.

Confidence
The head of state affirmed that the legal security offered by the country is also one of the elements for which many investors place all their confidence in the Dominican Republic when investing.

Furthermore, he said, the commitment made to promote and ensure ongoing collaboration between the State and the country's productive and economic sectors, through public-private partnerships, is of vital importance for growth and development.

He considered that these public-private partnerships are able to take on many of the Dominican State's plans and projects that had been stalled for years for various reasons.

“Now, with a shared vision for the future of the Dominican Republic, we are guaranteeing a country with significant economic growth, decent jobs, and a fair redistribution of our wealth, with the goal of reaching all Dominican households, families, and every citizen,” Abinader stated.

The leader maintained that for all these reasons he has been committed to ensuring all paths are open so that the change towards a prosperous future in this post-pandemic era becomes a reality, with a spirit of work in favor of the growth and stability of the Dominican Republic.

Abinader welcomed to the country the more than 300 investors and hotel operators from the region and much of the world who wanted to be present at this important meeting, and who come with the intention of exploring the challenges of the tourism industry at a global level.
