SANTO DOMINGO- To mark World Environment Day, Wednesday, June 5, Grupo Piñero organized a series of actions and initiatives designed to promote environmental awareness in all the destinations where it operates, including reforestation days, the installation of recycling centers, and environmental education activities.
In complete alignment with the United Nations' 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, the Group has implemented these initiatives with the aim of moving towards a responsible and regenerative tourism model that can be applied throughout the sector, according to a press release.
Isabel Piñero, Chief Sustainability Officer of Grupo Piñero, highlighted "how important it is for us to promote actions that continuously drive the preservation of the environment in all the countries where we are present, since, on a day as special as this, it is essential that we remember that the world belongs to everyone and that we must take care of it together."
Actions led from an absolute commitment to the planet
This year, commemorating World Environment Day and its motto “Our lands. Our future”, the company has involved employees and local communities with actions that promote the restoration of natural capital and biodiversity in its destinations.
In the Dominican Republic, Grupo Piñero has extended its environmental initiatives to various regions of the country. In Bávaro, through the Eco-Bahia Foundation, collection centers have been established at the El Cortecito and La Ceiba schools, where environmental awareness workshops have also been held for students. Additionally, the Group has provided recycling training for its employees at the Bávaro Complex.
Likewise, in the La Romana region , a reforestation project was carried out in Ramón Santana with the participation of staff from both the Group's hotel in the area and its residential complex. Finally, in the Northern Zone , the Group has joined the Sustainable Tourism Circuit, supporting it as a sponsor alongside the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur). This initiative seeks to promote sustainable tourism practices that respect and protect the region's natural and cultural resources, explains the press release.
In the Balearic Islands, the company reports that it has held a day as part of its reforestation initiative in the Serra de Tramuntana, which will involve planting 1,200 holm oaks during the months of October and December in the area, declared a Cultural Landscape by UNESCO.
During the day carried out on June 1st in collaboration with the Respiralia Foundation and Caixabank Volunteering, talks were given on forest management and on cystic fibrosis, as well as an activity of moving branches to prepare the area where the trees will be planted.
This first activity, which involved 32 company volunteers among other external volunteers, aimed to promote the conservation of biodiversity in this important natural heritage and the importance of air quality for people suffering from cystic fibrosis.
From the Canary Islands, it maintains that it has joined the Tenerife Renace project, supporting the environmental restoration, reforestation and conservation efforts in the forest area affected by the 2023 fires. This collaboration seeks to contribute to the recovery of local ecosystems, vital for the biodiversity and environmental health of the island.
On the other hand, in Mexico, specifically in the community of Chemuyil (Quintana Roo), a collection center has been established due to the lack of recycling facilities in the area. Furthermore, the Eco-Bahia Foundation, created by Grupo Piñero to develop projects for the conservation, maintenance, and improvement of natural resources, has provided training to the delegate and committee of Chemuyil on recycling practices, thus fostering a culture of sustainability in the local community.
Finally, in Jamaica, 100 trees have been planted in a protected area with the collaboration of 14 volunteers from Grupo Piñero to contribute to the restoration and preservation of local ecosystems.
