SANTO DOMINGO.– Every Holy Week has its rituals: suitcases packed, roads full, and the same urge to leave the city. But there's one that has become almost a tradition: driving without stopping at toll booths on Good Friday.
The RD Vial announced that this year the exemption from tolls will again be applied at all stations in the country during that day, a measure that, beyond the announcement, directly impacts the wallets of those who travel.
A pattern that repeats itself every year
This isn't the first time. In previous years, according to the agency, this decision has been repeated as part of the Holy Week traffic management plan, a time when vehicular traffic reaches one of its highest peaks. Thousands of Dominicans travel to the interior: beaches in the east, towns in the Cibao region, and destinations in the south become popular spots for family gatherings, relaxation, or religious observances.
On that day, major highways, such as the Duarte Highway, the Las Américas Highway, and the corridor to the Northeast, operate without the usual toll. The effect is immediate: shorter lines at stations and smoother travel amidst the massive increase in commuters.
More movement, fewer barriers
The economic relief, although temporary, is noticeable. According to data cited by RD Vial, for many families, especially those who travel long distances, avoiding toll payments represents accumulated savings at a time when expenses tend to increase.
But this measure doesn't come alone. Simultaneously, the road system indicated it will enter a reinforcement mode. Maintenance, road cleaning, and assistance crews are being deployed at strategic points, anticipating the increase in traffic. In addition, the roadside assistance service, available through 511, remains active to handle emergencies during the holiday.
More than just a convenience, toll-free Good Friday has become a key element in the dynamics of Holy Week in the Dominican Republic. A small gesture that, amidst the national traffic, makes the journey smoother.
