Golf: from exclusive practice to economic pillar of Dominican tourism

SANTO DOMINGO – Golf has ceased to be a sport reserved for exclusive circles and has become one of the strategic pillars of luxury tourism in the Dominican Republic. Its evolution, from a restricted social activity to a tourism product with a high economic impact, reflects the country's transformation into an internationally competitive destination, supported by the expansion of specialized infrastructure, foreign investment, and the integration of the sport into the national tourism offerings.

Origin

Golf has its roots in 15th-century Scotland, where the first formal references to the game were established. According to The R&A, the world governing body for golf, legal provisions restricting its practice existed as early as 1457 due to its growing popularity, making it one of the earliest official records of the sport.

Subsequently, Scotland consolidated the organizational foundations of golf by creating clubs, standardized rules, and competitive structures. This process allowed for its international expansion from the 18th century onward, especially into Europe and America, laying the groundwork for modern golf as a global sport.

Arrival in the Dominican Republic

In the Dominican Republic, the introduction of golf dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, linked to the presence of foreign companies, particularly American ones, in areas of economic development within the country. This pattern of introduction is consistent with the expansion of golf in other regions of the Caribbean, where the sport was initially practiced in private and corporate settings.

The institutional consolidation of golf in the country occurred with the creation of the Dominican Golf Federation (FEDOGOLF) in 1966, the body responsible for regulating, organizing, and promoting the sport at the national level. According to the Federation, its founding allowed the country to integrate into international golf structures and standardize the sport's practice.

A promoter of the tourism model

The development of golf in the Dominican Republic is closely linked to the growth of the tourism sector. From the second half of the 20th century, the country incorporated golf courses within hotel complexes as part of a strategy to diversify its tourism offerings, targeting the high-end segment.

The Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic (MITUR) recognizes golf as one of the key products within the luxury tourism offer, highlighting its contribution to attracting international visitors and investment in tourism infrastructure.

Likewise, international organizations such as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) point out that sports tourism, including golf, is a growing segment that drives the economic diversification of tourist destinations.

Economic impact and international projection

Today, golf has a significant impact on the Dominican economy, particularly in the real estate, hotel, and foreign direct investment sectors. The presence of world-class courses has strengthened the country's position as one of the leading golf destinations in the Caribbean.

Institutions such as the National Institute of Physical Education (INEFI) have promoted initiatives aimed at sports training from an early age, which suggests a gradual process of expanding access to this traditionally elitist sport.

In conclusion, golf in the Dominican Republic has evolved from a practice restricted to private circles to a structural element of the national tourism model. Its evolution reflects the country's ability to integrate globally recognized sports into its economic development strategy, solidifying its position as a competitive luxury tourism destination in the region.
