Teaching is suspended for two days, while the workday for this Wednesday is shortened.
SANTO DOMINGO-President Luis Abinader ordered the suspension of teaching for 48 hours, from Wednesday the 22nd to Thursday the 23rd, as well as work in the public and private sectors, starting at 1:00 pm.
The measures are effective in the provinces declared under red alert: Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Peravia, Azua, Barahona, Pedernales, San José de Ocoa and San Juan.
In the event that the authorities issue a red alert to another province or district, work in the public sector will be suspended from this Wednesday, starting from the moment the notice is given.
However, those in charge of public bodies, entities and companies may establish special working hours when the institution, by its nature, requires it, in order to guarantee the provision of essential services to citizens.
Meanwhile, the following provinces are under yellow alert : La Vega, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, La Altagracia, Monseñor Nouel, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, El Seibo, Independencia, and Elías Piña. The following provinces under green alert : Bahoruco, María Trinidad Sánchez, Samaná, and Santiago.
This meeting comes in response to the evolution of Tropical Storm Melissa across the south of the country and the threat of leaving accumulations of between 200 and 300 millimeters of rain in large areas of the national territory.
Tropical Storm Melissa formed Tuesday in the Caribbean Sea , triggering warnings for heavy rain and winds in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported the activation of 1,455 shelters in 14 provinces under yellow alert. Special attention was given to communities near ravines, river basins, and areas with poor drainage.
According to Indomet 's forecast , rainfall accumulations of up to 300 millimeters are expected in the coming hours, so the COE reiterated its call to the population to stay attentive to official bulletins and follow the recommendations of the authorities .
While this is happening, state institutions will remain in permanent session to ensure a coordinated and effective response to any eventuality.
The head of state, in a brief address, urged the population to go to safe places, and at the same time, affirmed that all relief agencies would remain in permanent session, since the important thing is to save lives and prevent disasters.
The president met this Tuesday, along with Vice President Raquel Peña , with heads of different government institutions at the National Palace, where they reviewed contingency plans and established the necessary guidelines to guarantee a timely and coordinated response from the Government to any eventuality that might arise.
