SANTO DOMINGO – Strengthening local value chains and building a more resilient tourism sector in the face of economic and environmental challenges will be the focus of a national forum that will bring together representatives from the tourism sector, international organizations, academia, and public entities in Santo Domingo.
According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the event will seek to generate proposals and alliances that will increase the socio-economic impact of tourism in communities and strengthen the sustainability of one of the most important sectors of the Dominican economy.
The analysis will take place on June 17th, in the José Martí Hall of the Kimpton Las Mercedes Hotel, in the Colonial Zone, during the celebration of the National Forum on Inclusive and Resilient Value Chains for Sustainable Tourism, an initiative promoted by the UNDP and Iberostar Beachfront Resorts.
Tourism with a greater local impact
According to the organizing entities, one of the main objectives of the meeting is to identify strategies that strengthen local production chains and allow the benefits of tourism to reach more sectors of the economy.
The proposal is based on the premise that tourism growth can become a broader development tool when it integrates local producers, entrepreneurs, small businesses and suppliers into the sector's value chain, generating economic opportunities and strengthening the productive fabric of communities.
Resilience and sustainability on the agenda
The conference will also address topics related to sustainability, environmental management, the resilience of tourist destinations, and the challenges facing the industry in a context marked by climate change, economic transformations, and the new demands of the global market.
Likewise, the exchange of experiences and best practices aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of Dominican tourism will be promoted without losing sight of the criteria of social inclusion and environmental sustainability.
Participation of key stakeholders
The forum is supported by the Dominican Republic Hotel and Tourism Association (ASONAHORES), the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), the Wave of Change movement, and the National Business Support Network for Environmental Protection (ECORED).
The Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources also participate as strategic allies, institutions that collaborate in efforts to promote a more sustainable tourism development model aligned with current challenges.
