The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the main global event where world leaders, experts, and businesses meet to discuss and make decisions on climate change. At its 29th edition, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, COP29 focused on setting new targets to mitigate the environmental impact in key sectors, such as energy, transport, and, of course, construction.
The construction sector, responsible for 37% of global energy-related CO₂ emissions (according to the UN), occupies a central place in the climate conversation. What is discussed and decided in this forum directly affects how we design, build, and live in our cities.
Key outcomes of COP29
- Recognition of the construction sector as a priority:
For the first time, there was an explicit global call to reduce carbon emissions from the construction sector. While the urgency was acknowledged, the commitments are not ambitious enough to guarantee rapid decarbonization. - Loss and Damage Fund
: The financing mechanism for developing countries affected by climate change was strengthened, opening up the possibility of financing resilient and sustainable infrastructure projects. - Focus on Sustainable Cities:
Cities, responsible for more than 70% of global emissions, were highlighted as the epicenter of change. Discussions centered on how to integrate green buildings, sustainable mobility, and resilient infrastructure into urban environments.
How does COP29 affect sustainable construction?
The results of COP29 underscore the need to rethink how we design and build. Here are some key implications:

The design phase is crucial. Integrating advanced tools such as artificial intelligence can optimize resources, reduce environmental impact, and improve the energy efficiency of buildings. - Environmentally friendly materials
COP29 emphasized the urgency of adopting materials with low environmental impact, such as low-carbon concrete or recycled alternatives. - Resilient and green cities:
Building sustainable cities means prioritizing infrastructure that combines green spaces, energy efficiency, and resilience to extreme weather events.
