Cabo Rojo enters a new phase with private management of tourism development

SANTO DOMINGO. – The Cabo Rojo tourism project, in the province of Pedernales, is entering a decisive phase with the transfer of total management to the private sector, marking a milestone in the country's real estate-tourism development model.

The Dominican State will now transfer direct administration and operation of the destination to the Cabo Rojo Consortium, comprised of Grupo Puntacana, AFI Reservas, and AFI Popular. These entities will assume the planning, operation, and promotion of the destination after the government completes its structural role.

According to the Pro-Pedernales Trust, the State has concluded its assigned stage: providing the project with the necessary basic infrastructure, access, and enabling conditions to ensure its viability. With these works completed, and some already operational, a new phase focused on tourism development and private real estate development is now underway.

announcement was made at FITUR 2026.

During the presentation at FITUR 2026 in Madrid, the trust's CEO, Sigmund Freund, explained that this transition follows the project's original design, where the government acted as an initial catalyst and then ceded the leading role to private investment to ensure sustainability, operational efficiency, and long-term growth.

From a real estate perspective, the full entry of the private sector strengthens Cabo Rojo's appeal as a new hub for tourism investment, with opportunities in hotels, vacation homes, complementary services, and planned urban development.

The model aims to generate jobs, boost the southwest economy, and foster local production chains.

The Cabo Rojo Consortium will now be responsible for executing the investment plan, consolidating existing infrastructure, and positioning the destination in international markets, with the goal of making Pedernales an emerging leader in tourism and real estate investment in the Caribbean.
