SANTO DOMINGO – The Airbnb accommodation platform and the Ministry of the Interior and Police (MIP) announced this Wednesday the launch of an alliance that includes training, investigative tools and preventive actions aimed at strengthening tourist security in the Dominican Republic.
The information was released by Airbnb, a company that explained that the agreement seeks to strengthen cooperation with Dominican authorities and improve prevention mechanisms within the short-term accommodation sector.
Officers are being trained in investigative tools
As part of the first measures implemented, officials from the Ministry of the Interior and Police received training on the use of the Airbnb Investigations Portal, a tool used by police and judicial authorities to make legal requests for information within investigative processes.
According to the company, the system allows for faster collaboration with security agencies in cases related to possible illegal activities.
Prevention of human trafficking
The alliance also includes face-to-face and virtual training workshops aimed at MIP officers and members of the host community in the Dominican Republic.
According to Airbnb, these workshops are focused on the prevention, identification and alert of possible situations related to human trafficking within tourist accommodations.
The sessions aim to provide guidance on risk signs, action protocols, and reporting mechanisms for suspicious situations.
They will develop a security guide
Airbnb also reported that it will work with the Ministry of the Interior and Police to develop a security guide that will bring together recommendations and best preventative practices for hosts and users of the platform in the country.
The company stated that the goal is to continue strengthening "safer and more reliable" accommodation environments for both domestic and foreign tourists.
Airbnb's Director of Public Policy and Communication for the region, Carlos Muñoz, noted that the company seeks to maintain ongoing collaboration with Dominican authorities to reduce risks and strengthen tourist security.
