SANTO DOMINGO.– The Dominican Republic positioned itself as the fastest growing market in the Caribbean in terms of air traffic during 2025, moving 19.6 million passengers, which represented a year-on-year increase of 3.1%, according to data released by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA).
The Dominican Republic's performance occurred within a regional context of moderate expansion. Latin America and the Caribbean as a whole registered 477.3 million passengers last year, a 3.8% increase compared to 2014.
According to ALTA, 84% of regional expansion came from operations within Latin America and the Caribbean, reflecting a dynamic driven primarily by intraregional connectivity.
In the Dominican Republic, passenger volume solidifies the country's position as one of the Caribbean's main air hubs, driven largely by tourism and international connectivity. Punta Cana International Airport alone is projected to handle over 11 million passengers in 2025, according to official figures.
ALTA CEO Peter Cerdá described the regional performance as “stable and positive,” although he noted that growth could accelerate with more efficient regulatory frameworks and conditions that strengthen the sector's competitiveness.
At the regional level, Brazil led the air market with 129.6 million passengers, a growth of 9.4%, while Argentina registered the largest percentage expansion, with an increase of 13.2% and 33.3 million passengers transported.
Air traffic patterns are considered a key indicator of economic activity, tourism, and trade integration, so the Dominican Republic's leadership in the Caribbean reinforces its position as a strategic destination in the region.
