SANTO DOMINGO – All inquiries about her name allude to flower, beauty, fragility, passion, color, love, sacrifice, sensuality. An internet search leads to numerous songs with that title; even our own Juan Luis Guerra performs one.
“Open the leaves of the wind, my love, put a saddle on the river, ride on, and if you get cold, wrap yourself in the skin of the stars, use the full moon as your pillow, my love, and my love as your dream, and a poppy told me yesterday that I'm going to see you, that I'm going to see you, that I'm going to see you, and a rainbow painted my skin so I can wake up with you.".
Her mother wanted to continue the family name by naming her after herself, and Amapola Colón-Custodio embodies many of the positive qualities associated with her name. She is a mother, daughter, wife, professional, real estate agent, woman.
With her we launched the series “High-End Women”, in commemoration of March 8th, “International Women’s Day”, an occasion in which we will pay tribute to women in the real estate sector, those who go out into the streets every day to fight against all odds to get ahead, the warriors of life who know no limits to their dedication.
Our interviewee belongs to the Urban Group family and resides in Miami, where she has worked as a real estate consultant for eight years, although she has 25 years of experience in sales. Her primary role, like every woman, is being the mother of three beautiful children.
“Being a woman means fulfilling and representing the most important part of humanity, since without women there is no procreation or human reproduction,” is how this woman from Cibao, who emigrated to the United States 20 years ago from her native Jarabacoa, defines her gender.
A nurse, an athlete, and a dancer brought joy to her essence as a woman and allowed her to experience the most sacred and sublime act of love: becoming a mother, today proud of her three children whom she refers to as "wonderful human beings".
Security, determination, and hard work are the three words this warrior uses to define herself. “Society has had to give us an important place in every area where we are present, because we have shown that we are strong and, above all, determined,” she answers one of our questions about the role of women in society.
In the real estate sector and in any other field, this business administration graduate knows her rights and sets boundaries, because she has a clear understanding of "who I am and where I'm going." She is married to David Custodio, the man who "supports her and pushes her to be better and go further every day.".
“He is my complement. Without him I wouldn’t be the mother I am, nor the professional I am; he is truly my support to keep going every day,” says Amapola.
He prioritizes his multiple roles, always keeping them in mind and aligning them with his schedule, without diminishing the importance of any one. He understands that the dynamic between men and women has changed over the years, although men have found it difficult to adapt to being led by women.
“We are the new generation of the real estate world, we are here to stay and we are the key piece in a negotiation since we can understand and put ourselves more easily in the place of our clients and thus help them to materialize the purchase of that much desired property,” explains the empowered woman.
La Amapola de Jarabacoa understands that women have made progress in their role and that, in fact, in every leadership organization, there are female representatives who highlight their importance in society. It is very clear that even though men are in charge, they will always need female support because “we are the majority.”.
