SANTO DOMINGO.– The Ministry of Tourism (MITUR), through the Presidential Commission for Tourism Development of Pedernales, presented to a mission from the World Bank the strategic plan that articulates the tourism development of the province of Pedernales and the Enriquillo region, as part of the Cabo Rojo project.
The information was published on the official website of the Presidency of the Dominican Republic, where it was detailed that the meeting was led by the Vice Minister of International Cooperation of MITUR and Executive Director of the Commission, Carlos Peguero.
The meeting was attended by World Bank, including representatives from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), as part of a mission aimed at strengthening technical support to the Cabo Rojo destination.
Structured investment and sustainability
During the presentation, MITUR outlined a comprehensive plan based on two strategic pillars: channeling investments through the Pro-Pedernales Trust and implementing public policies focused on environmental sustainability, social development, and institutional strengthening.
According to reports, the project prioritizes improving basic services, developing local human capital, and generating economic opportunities for communities in the Enriquillo region, with the goal of ensuring that tourism growth has an inclusive impact.
In its first phase, Cabo Rojo envisions the construction of approximately 4,700 hotel rooms, which is projected to significantly boost the economy of the south and generate direct and indirect jobs.
Non-refundable technical support
The World Bank's mission seeks to initiate a non-reimbursable technical assistance process that will identify strategic investments and consolidate the destination under international standards of competitiveness and sustainability.
During their visit, the delegation will conduct field tours and hold meetings with authorities and stakeholders linked to the tourism, planning and regional development sectors.
The Pedernales project is part of a territorial development strategy promoted by the Dominican Government to turn Cabo Rojo into a high-level tourist reference and a catalyst for economic and social growth for the Enriquillo region.
