Spaniards in the Dominican Republic will be able to vote in the general elections on November 29

Citizens registered as residents at the Consulate General of Spain in Santo Domingo and in the Electoral Census of Absent Residents may vote by mail or cast their ballot in person between November 21 and 26

Santo Domingo. – Spanish citizens residing in the Dominican Republic will be able to participate in the Spanish general elections, scheduled for Sunday, November 29, 2026, through the procedure enabled for those registered in the Electoral Census of Absent Residents, known as CERA.

The information published by the Consulate General of Spain in Santo Domingo states that voters may exercise their right to vote by mail or in person at the ballot box set up at the consular headquarters.

To participate under this procedure, citizens must be registered as residents within the consular district and be registered to vote in the corresponding CERA (Registry of Absent Voters Residing Abroad) for these elections. The electoral register used for the November 29 elections was closed on August 1, 2026.

Unlike previous elections, those registered in the CERA (Registry of Absent Voters Residing Abroad) do not need to request a ballot in advance. The Electoral Census Office sends the necessary documentation to the address registered by each citizen.

Voting at the ballot box in Santo Domingo

Spaniards registered in the CERA will be able to personally cast their vote between November 21 and 26, 2026, both days included, at the Consulate General of Spain in Santo Domingo, located at Avenida Independencia number 1205.

The authorization of consular offices as centers for depositing votes abroad is contemplated in the resolution published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for these elections.

The election day in Spain will be held on Sunday, November 29, and will elect the representatives of the Congress of Deputies and the Senate.

Voting by mail will also be possible

Voters residing in the Dominican Republic who prefer not to vote in person may submit their ballot by mail to the Consular Office. The deadline for mailing ballots to the Consulate is November 24, 2026.

Voters must follow the instructions included in the electoral documentation and respect the established deadlines to avoid having their vote excluded from the process.

The documentation sent to voters includes the necessary ballot envelopes, the voter registration certificate, and information on the voting procedure. Ballots can also be downloaded through official channels once the candidates have been officially announced.

The deadline for temporary residents has already passed

The procedure is different for Spanish citizens who are temporarily in the Dominican Republic and maintain their habitual residence in Spain.

In these cases, voters had to be registered as non-residents in the Consular Registration Register and personally request the electoral documentation through the procedure known as ERTA.

The deadline for completing both procedures expired on October 31, so it is no longer available for those who did not complete the application within the electoral calendar.

Once the documentation has been received, voters who completed the process within the deadline must send their vote by certified mail to the corresponding polling station in Spain, following the instructions received and within the established deadlines.

A tight schedule

The Spanish general elections on November 29 will be held just a few weeks after the call, which has concentrated the procedures for overseas voting into a short schedule.

For Spaniards residing in the Dominican Republic, the next key dates are November 21, when the period to cast votes in person begins, November 24, the deadline for receiving votes sent by mail to the Consulate, and November 26, the last day to vote in person at the consular headquarters.

The Consulate General of Spain in Santo Domingo keeps electoral information published on its official website, where citizens can consult the instructions and requirements corresponding to each voting method.
