Sustainable housing advances with ecological materials and energy efficiency

SANTO DOMINGO.- The development of homes with ecological certification and energy efficiency systems is gaining ground in the construction sector, driven by the need to reduce the environmental impact of buildings and improve the quality of life of their inhabitants.

The so-called "Green Building" or green construction promotes buildings designed to optimize the use of resources such as energy, water, and materials, as well as reduce polluting emissions throughout the building's life cycle. This approach includes everything from project planning to construction, use, and eventual recycling of its components.

According to analyses published in the sustainability magazine EcoAvant, eco-friendly homes allow for a significant reduction in resource consumption, with savings that can reach up to 30% in energy and 40% in water, thanks to energy efficiency systems and resource management technologies.

Among the most common features of these homes are the incorporation of solar panels, advanced thermal insulation systems and efficient ventilation, elements that help to reduce the energy demand of buildings and, consequently, their environmental footprint.

Sustainable materials in construction

Another key aspect of the rise of "Green Building" is the use of eco-friendly building materials. In recent years, the use of natural or renewable resources such as bamboo, cork, and certified wood, selected for their lower environmental impact and their ability to reduce carbon emissions during the construction process.

According to specialized publications in Fioyen, choosing eco-friendly materials not only helps preserve natural resources but also improves the energy efficiency of homes. These materials have insulating properties that help maintain a stable indoor temperature, reducing the need for heating and cooling systems and the associated energy consumption.

Furthermore, research on sustainable construction indicates that the use of renewable or recyclable materials can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of housing projects by decreasing emissions generated during the manufacture and transport of conventional materials.

Ecological certifications and international standards

The expansion of sustainable construction has also been accompanied by certification systems that assess the environmental performance of buildings. One of the best known is LEED, developed by the US Green Building Council, which analyzes factors such as energy efficiency, water consumption, indoor environmental quality, and responsible use of materials.

Other certifications, such as EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies), also promote the reduction of resource consumption in buildings, driving more sustainable construction practices in different regions of the world.

Environmental and health benefits

In addition to their environmental impact, sustainable homes also offer direct benefits to residents. Experts point out that these buildings typically improve indoor air quality, reduce the use of toxic substances in building materials, and promote more stable thermal conditions.

The growth of this type of construction also responds to global pressure to reduce emissions associated with the construction sector, considered one of the largest consumers of energy and generators of greenhouse gases.

Faced with these challenges, architects, developers, and urban planners agree that "Green Building" represents one of the main strategies for moving towards more sustainable cities, where technological innovation and respect for the environment are integrated into the design of the homes of the future.
