The entity supports 21 solar and wind power projects in 10 provinces of the country
SANTO DOMINGO.– Banco Popular Dominicano reported that by the end of 2025 it had financed renewable energy projects for an amount exceeding US$600 million, with an associated installed capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW), distributed in more than 20 initiatives currently in operation in various regions of the country.
These operations include direct financing, syndicated loans, trust structures and participation as a guarantee agent, in solar, wind and biomass projects.
The installed capacity of these green energy projects represents approximately 38.3% of the total renewable generation currently in operation in the Dominican Republic, which positions the bank as one of the main facilitators of sustainable energy development at the national level.
This information was provided by Mr. Francisco García, Vice President of the Investment Banking Area, within the framework of the international forum Concordia Horizon Summit 2026, held in the city of Punta Cana, which brought together leaders from the public, private and civil society sectors to address the main challenges of the global and regional agenda.
Strategic boost to renewable energies
The projects backed by Banco Popular are located in thirteen provinces, reflecting a broad and geographically diversified territorial coverage within its energy financing portfolio.
The provinces with operational projects that have the bank's participation are Montecristi, Puerto Plata, María Trinidad Sánchez and Santiago in the northern region; Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal and Peravia in the south-central region; Azua, Baní, San Juan de la Maguana and Barahona in the southwest; and San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana in the eastern region of the country.
Among the most representative operations by financing volume are the Coastal Solar project, located in San Pedro de Macorís, with an installed capacity of 131 MW and a loan of US$120 million; the support for the CEPM Zero project for US$130 million, which includes individual parks as well as the installation of solar panels on the roofs of hotels in the Punta Cana area; the Cotoperí I, II and III parks, located in La Romana, with a capacity of 162.6 MW and financing of US$100 million; the Pedro Corto park located in San Juan de la Maguana with a capacity of 82.7 MW and financing of US$57 million; the Matrisol and Los Negros parks of the Akuo group, located in María Trinidad Sánchez and Azua, with a capacity of 67 MW and financing of US$48.6 million; and the Zonaxol park of 60 MW and financing of US$28.8 million, this being the first large-scale park to be built on the roofs of industrial buildings in a free zone.
Additionally, the bank, in its role as advisor in the structuring of public offering instruments, structured the first two green bonds in the Dominican stock market: the Larimar Public Offering Trust for US$100 million, and the Banco Popular green bonds placed to date for RD$300 million.
Sustainable vision
Banco Popular has participated in these initiatives under various arrangements, including its role as lead lender, loan arranger, trustee, or collateral agent. It has also channeled resources through special purpose funds to expand the availability of financing for renewable energy projects.
The institution indicated that these operations include technical and financial support for the promoters, from the initial structuring to the execution, which facilitates the implementation of projects with a high level of technical and financial complexity.
This support for renewable energy development demonstrates Popular's sustainable vision to contribute to reducing the country's carbon footprint.
Clean energy in the bank's own operations
In addition to its participation in the financing of projects at the national level, Banco Popular Dominicano has incorporated the use of renewable sources in its own institutional energy consumption.
The bank has 59 photovoltaic solar panel systems installed at its branches, including the Casa del Cordón Taíno Cultural Center, contributing to an average annual production of 14,477 megawatt-hours (MWh). This clean energy generation, along with the supply from AES Dominicana to power the Torre Popular Complex, currently represents 59% of the bank's total electricity consumption.
The bank's internal renewable generation infrastructure includes 13,100 solar panels, with an installed capacity of 3.8 MW, allowing an estimated average annual reduction of emissions of 8,484 tons of CO₂.
In the case of the Torre Popular Complex, the energy supplied by AES Dominicana comes directly from the Bayasol photovoltaic plant, with 4 MW dedicated exclusively to supplying that facility.
