Aerial modernization: country achieves total coverage with Doppler network

SANTO DOMINGO.- President Luis Abinader led the commissioning of a C-band Doppler weather radar at the Dominican Aeronautical Complex, equipment that will allow for complete meteorological surveillance coverage throughout the national territory.

According to information provided by the Presidency of the Dominican Republic, the installation of the system is part of the technological modernization process aimed at strengthening operational safety in the country's airspace.

Total territory coverage

This new radar completes the triangulation of meteorological monitoring, joining those already installed in Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, allowing for comprehensive monitoring of atmospheric phenomena over the Dominican territory.

The equipment, a WRS300 dual-polarization, solid-state radar, has an effective coverage of 250 kilometers and a maximum range that can extend up to 400 kilometers. The investment in the project amounts to 250 million pesos, according to official figures.

Impact on operational safety

According to the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), the incorporation of this technology strengthens the ability to anticipate adverse weather conditions, improving decision-making by pilots and air traffic controllers.

The system allows monitoring of rainfall intensity and distribution, wind direction and speed, as well as other atmospheric patterns that are crucial for takeoff, landing, and route management processes.

For the aeronautical sector, the consolidation of this radar network represents a structural advance in risk management and operational planning.

Interinstitutional integration

The Presidency also reported that the radar server will be available to the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) and the Emergency Operations Center (COE), with the aim of optimizing the response to atmospheric events and cyclone seasons.

During the event, authorities from the aeronautical sector assessed the impact of the system on emergency management and strategic planning of air operations.

Upcoming infrastructure

According to official information, the inauguration of a new control tower at the San Isidro Air Base is also planned, equipped with state-of-the-art communication systems, DVOR-DME and alternative energy backup, which will expand the operational capacity at that terminal.
