A convention center and four hotels to boost tourism in the capital

SANTO DOMINGO.-The expansion of the tourist route does not stop and the current Government continues to bet on its growth, expanding the alternatives now that the Dominican Republic is fashionable and in the sights of preferred destinations worldwide.

Yesterday, David Collado, Minister of Tourism, announced that the Government is accelerating preparations to begin, in approximately three months, the construction of the Santo Domingo Convention Center, announced by President Luis Abinader at the 2022 edition of FITUR, the International Tourism Fair.

Collado explained that government authorities are making progress in preparing the terms and conditions that will govern the start of construction on the same site, where the Hotel Hispaniola once operated, whose land was declared to be of public utility by Decree 296-22.

“We are going to begin the construction process of the Santo Domingo Convention Center in the next 90 days, where the Hotel Hispaniola stood for many years, and we are going to preserve that building,” the minister declared, after receiving an award for his performance in the tourism sector.

The official announced that he has a meeting planned for next Monday with the President of the Republic to discuss the issue and establish the essential points for the project's foundational document

Four hotels

As a complement to the Convention Center, there are plans to increase accommodation capacity in the Dominican capital for visitors arriving to participate in activities.

The president of the Santo Domingo Hotel Association (AHSD), Yudit García, told Diario Libre that, at the end of 2023, "major North American companies" will begin operations on two of the country's main avenues: Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln.

The planned openings include four new hotels that will add 500 to 600 rooms to Santo Domingo's lodging options, which will contribute to the growth of business and gastronomic tourism, among others, García said.

"(These are) four new properties from hotel brands, not necessarily short-term rentals, which helps to strengthen demand," said the AHSD representative.
