SANTO DOMINGO- The violent death of architect Leslie Rosado at the hands of Corporal Jandi Disla Batista on the night of Saturday the second of this month, as she was returning from participating in her father José Rosado's birthday, has unleashed a wave of reactions and actions aimed at curbing crime in the country.
Today, the media are reporting on several government initiatives aimed at curbing insecurity in the face of numerous incidents that have sparked public fear. Complaints and expressions of outrage on social media have continued unabated, making it one of the top trending topics all week. This situation has been compounded by other acts of violence reported in recent hours.
A seminar sponsored by several government entities is scheduled for today with the purpose of "accelerating" the transformation of the National Police, and will include international representatives.
The seminar, entitled “Working Group for the Transformation of the National Police”, will last three days and will take place in the Convention Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs starting at 10:00 a.m.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has joined the Dominican government's efforts to address several of the country's pressing social issues, including police reform.
Yesterday, Samantha Power, representative of USAID, along with Robert Thomas, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of that nation, visited President Luis Abinader at the National Palace, where they led the Second High-Level Dialogue on Institutional Reforms, with the objective of strengthening cooperation between both countries and reinforcing democracy.
“We are meeting for the second time this year, the representatives of the United States of America and the Dominican Republic, in this high-level Dialogue on Institutional Reforms, to address various issues on the common agenda of our countries, for the strengthening of institutions, cooperation between States and the reinforcement of democracy in our region and the world,” said the president.
Court hears case today regarding coercion of defendants
Judge Leomar Cruz will hear the case today at 4:30 p.m. regarding the pretrial detention of Janli Disla Batista, a corporal in the National Police, and the motorcycle taxi driver, Rafael Castillo Novas, alias Argenis, who are implicated in the death of architect Leslie Rosado, which occurred last Saturday in Andrés, Boca Chica. The prosecution accuses the driver who transported the police officer of being an accomplice.
The decision to postpone the hearing for the second time was adopted by the Permanent Attention Office of Santo Domingo East, at the request of Castillo's defense, with the objective of studying the file and being able to present arguments in favor of their client.
