The Dominican Republic is making progress in validating its sustainable tourism strategy

SANTO DOMINGO – The Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) and UN Tourism conducted the third technical mission in Santo Domingo as part of a cooperation project aimed at defining the National Strategy and Policy for Sustainable Tourism in the Dominican Republic. This phase focused on reviewing the draft document, gathering feedback from various sectors, and assessing its feasibility for future implementation.

The draft strategy addresses issues such as competitiveness, social inclusion, and adaptation to climate change, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. Although it has not yet been officially published, the organizers indicated that it aims to build a framework to guide the country's tourism development in the coming years, with an emphasis on territorial sustainability.

A press release explains that the activities spanned twelve days and included bilateral meetings, sectoral workshops, thematic roundtables, and training sessions. Representatives from public institutions, private companies, universities, and community organizations participated, with the aim of contributing technical and operational input to the document under discussion.

One of the activities was the public presentation of the project, held in the context of an event where UN Tourism recognized Minister David Collado. Although the meeting included a discussion on tourism sustainability in the Americas, the technical validation of the draft was the central focus of the mission.

The international delegation was composed of UN Tourism officials, including Natalia Bayona, Gustavo Santos, Jaime Mayaki, and Antonio López de Ávila, who worked alongside the national technical team. Discussions focused on refining the document's content and preparing its official presentation, scheduled for December of this year.

Mitur and UN Tourism reported that this third technical mission aimed to validate the draft of the Dominican Republic's National Sustainable Tourism Strategy and Policy.
