"Talent without work is nothing." — Cristiano Ronaldo
By Manuel Medina,
Special to El Inmobiliario
SANTO DOMINGO – Dear Christian: Perhaps these words will never reach your door, but that doesn't matter. The most sincere letters don't always reach their intended recipient; sometimes they find someone who needs to believe again.
The world knew you as "The Beast," CR7, a goal-scoring machine, a champion, a tireless competitor. I want to remember the boy who one day left a humble neighborhood in Madeira with a suitcase full of uncertainty and a dream so big it seemed impossible. Few could have imagined that this boy, who left his family behind at just twelve years old to chase a ball, would end up becoming one of the most influential athletes in history.
For over two decades, we watched record after record fall. We saw stadiums at your feet, heard the "Siuu!" echo in every corner of the planet, and witnessed millions of people trying to imitate your celebration, your discipline, and your hunger for self-improvement. But your greatest victory was never written on a scoreboard.
Many will say your story is measured in goals, Ballon d'Or awards, or Champions League titles. Others will talk about the rivalry that defined a generation. However, I believe that reducing your legacy to statistics would be to forget what you truly achieved.
You taught that talent matters, but that discipline and obsession can also change a destiny. You taught that success doesn't always belong to the most gifted, but to those who understand that the hardest victory is over a single rival: the version of oneself that settles.
Life wasn't perfect for you either. It took your father from you far too soon. It forced you to endure one of the most painful losses a human being can experience: the loss of a child.
It also taught you that even legends cry, that not all dreams end with lifting the most desired cup, and that not even the greatest can write a perfect ending.
However, perhaps therein lies the greatest lesson of your story.
Because, while the world tried to define you with words like "legend", "idol" or "immortal", you chose a much simpler one: normal.
And perhaps that answer explains more about you than any of your records.
You never acted like someone convinced they'd reached the top. You acted like someone who, waking up every morning, still found a reason to keep improving. Perhaps that's why the admiration never stemmed solely from your goals. It stemmed from your understanding of hard work.
And it was precisely that hunger that transcended football.
While many were talking about the World Cup that never came, millions of people had already found something far more valuable than a trophy in you. They found the courage to get up after failure, the discipline to study when it seemed easier to give up, the perseverance to train one more day, and the conviction that great dreams are rarely achieved by chance.
Perhaps you never won the one title missing from your trophy case. But long ago you won something that very few athletes achieve: the hearts, admiration, and dreams of millions of people.
And that's why, Cristiano, when time has finished writing your story, you won't just be remembered as one of the greatest footballers of all time. You'll be remembered as the man who transformed effort into hope and who, from a small corner of Madeira, ended up leading millions of dreams around the world.
CR7. The Beast. The Commander. Mr. Champions. Thank you.
Thank you for the goals, the titles, and the records. But above all, thank you for showing that dreams don't always belong to those with the most talent, but also to those who decide to pursue them with unwavering discipline.
We will continue to enjoy every match as long as football has the privilege of seeing you compete. And when the day comes that you decide to leave, the stadiums will fall silent, but your legacy will continue to resonate in the lives of millions.
Because goals are celebrated. Trophies are displayed. But the lessons remain.
Goals made Cristiano Ronaldo famous. His mentality made his legacy eternal.
Maybe that was your best goal. And it never appeared on a scoreboard.
And as we have done so many times when we've seen you reach a new goal, this letter also deserves to end in only one way:
SIUUUUUUUUUUUU!
