SANTO DOMINGO.- Banco Popular Dominicano celebrated the eighth edition of the Popular University Cup, bringing together more than 200 students from 12 universities who competed in five electronic sports or esports disciplines, demonstrating the connection of the initiative with the interests of the new generations.
Launched in 2017, the Copa Universitaria Popular has established itself as a platform for promoting university talent, incorporating values such as discipline, leadership, healthy competition, and teamwork into its various editions. Its format combines online qualifying rounds with in-person finals.
The Popular University Cup will continue in the coming months with its futsal phase, thus completing the 2025 edition of this platform that promotes university talent in different disciplines.
Esports winners 2025
The live esports finals, held at Sambil, drew over 800 attendees throughout the day. RD$570,000 in cash prizes were awarded across the various disciplines during this phase.
The League of Legends, Valorant, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournaments awarded RD$80,000 to the first-place winner, RD$40,000 to the second-place winner, and RD$20,000 to the third-place winner. Mobile Legends Bang Bang awarded RD$60,000, RD$30,000, and RD$15,000, respectively, while EA Sports FC25 offered prizes of RD$25,000, RD$12,500, and RD$7,500 for the top three finishers.
The Technological Institute of the Americas (ITLA) achieved first place in the disciplines of League of Legends, Valorant and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and third place in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.
The Ibero-American University (UNIBE) obtained first place in EA Sports FC25 and second place in League of Legends.
The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) took first place in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, second place in EA Sports FC25, and third place in both League of Legends and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Meanwhile, the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) achieved second place in Valorant and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and third place in EA Sports FC25, and the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC) won second place in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and third place in Valorant.
