SANTO DOMINGO. Authorities have issued a yellow alert in several provinces of the country due to increased heavy rainfall. This condition implies a risk of flooding, landslides, and dangerous currents, especially in low-lying areas near rivers, ravines, dams, or coastlines.
Civil Defense recommends that citizens, as a preventative measure, identify evacuation routes to higher ground, prepare backpacks with personal documents protected in plastic bags, and have portable radios, battery-powered flashlights, and first-aid kits available. It is also suggested that roofs, drains, and sewers be cleaned to prevent blockages.
"During the alert period, if authorities order an evacuation, you must follow the instructions immediately. If you remain in your home, it is advisable to disconnect the electricity, gas, and water services, close doors and windows, and stay informed through official channels. Avoid crossing rivers or flooded streets and stay away from trees, poles, or unstable structures. If you become isolated, it is recommended that you go to the highest point available and wait for assistance," the agency advises.
It states that once the storm has passed, homes for potential damage. Electrical appliances should not be plugged in until they are completely dry. It is important to clean up any hazardous spills , eliminate standing water to prevent pests, and participate in community recovery efforts. Authorities will announce when it is safe to return to affected homes.
