Which provinces are under red alert due to Tropical Storm Melissa?

The latest report at 11:00 pm on Tuesday night states that the atmospheric phenomenon continues to move west-northwest over the Caribbean Sea with the possibility of intensifying in the coming hours.

SANTO DOMINGO. - In anticipation of Tropical Storm Melissa, whose passage through Dominican territory has already begun to cause effects and whose rainfall forecasts project over 300 millimeters, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) declared nine provinces under red alert on Tuesday night .

Until Tuesday night, the areas where the greatest rainfall would occur are the National District, Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Peravia, San José de Ocoa, Azua, San Juan, Barahona and Pedernales.

Yellow

The provinces listed are La Vega, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, La Altagracia, Monseñor Nouel, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, El Seibo, Independencia, and Elías Piña. The provinces marked in green are Bahoruco, María Trinidad Sánchez, Samaná, and Santiago.

Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the agency, released the information after a follow-up meeting led by President Luis Abinader along with relief agencies, where various government representatives were also present.

Méndez reported that the country is in permanent session , and that the measures will be updated as alert levels increase in other provinces.

"From this moment on, we will be in permanent session through the COE and the agencies that comprise it, to safeguard life , which is the most important thing," he commented.

He urged all authorities present to maintain the protection of lives and property as a priority, in line with the central concern of the Government.

The director of the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), Gloria Ceballos 62 millimeters were recorded in the area of ​​the Centro de los Héroes (Feria), in the National District, where the rainfall was most intense.

Tropical Storm Melissa continues to move west-northwest over the Caribbean Sea and may intensify in the coming hours.

According to the latest report from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), issued at 11:00 p.m. (Eastern Time), the center of Tropical Storm Melissa was located near latitude 14.2 North, longitude 74.0 West, approximately 520 kilometers south of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
