The reforestation effort involved authorities from the Superintendency of the Securities Market.
SANTO DOMINGO. - A total of 100 volunteer employees of Grupo Popular, accompanied by a delegation from the Superintendency of the Securities Market, headed by its superintendent, Ernesto Bournigal Read, participated this Friday in a reforestation day on lands of the Plan Sierra, reaffirming the joint commitment to the sustainable development of the country and the preservation of the environment.
The reforestation took place in Los Montones Arriba, San José de las Matas, where volunteers planted 3,000 trees in this mountain community, as part of the ecological restoration plan promoted by Grupo Popular, in collaboration with Plan Sierra, for more than two decades.
This planting will contribute to increasing the forest cover of La Sierra by 66.6 tareas (approximately 1.2 acres), which will benefit the Bao sub-basin and the Jánico micro-basin. In their mature stage, these planted trees will be able to capture 960 tons of CO2, retain 360,000 kilograms of soil, and store up to 9 million liters of water annually.
Commitment to the environment
For more than twenty years, Grupo Popular has carried out reforestation days with its collaborators and various allies, accumulating more than 1.3 million trees planted throughout the country to date.
The objective of these plantings is to contribute to the increase and recovery of forest cover, soil retention, protection of water basins and the CO2 capture capacity of the Dominican Republic.
During the event, the Vice President of the Subsidiaries Area of the Popular Group's Stock Market, Mr. José Manuel Cuervo, highlighted that the purpose of this day is "to restore forest cover, protect soils and water sources, and actively contribute to mitigating climate change.".
For his part, the Superintendent of the Securities Market, Mr. Ernesto Bournigal Read, praised the culture of Popular Volunteering, stating that it “truly demonstrates a sense of corporate social responsibility.” “For us at the Securities Market Superintendency, this is of vital importance,” said the Superintendent.
This is the second reforestation day carried out this year by Grupo Popular, in which members of the Popular Excellence scholarship program of Banco Popular Dominicano also participated.
