SANTO DOMINGO.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) maintains a yellow alert for several provinces of the Dominican Republic due to the effects of Tropical Storm Melissa, which continues to generate significant rainfall in different regions of the country.
Among the provinces under yellow alert are popular tourist destinations such as La Altagracia, La Romana, and Samaná. These areas have experienced intermittent rainfall since early morning, with water accumulation in both urban and rural areas.
In La Altagracia province, home to the tourist destinations of Punta Cana and Bávaro, moderate rains accompanied by gusts of wind have been reported. Local authorities have activated prevention protocols in hotel and coastal areas.
La Romana has experienced continuous downpours that have affected mobility in residential and tourist areas. Minor flooding has been observed in ravines and storm drains, with no reports of structural damage so far.
In Samaná, persistent rains have been falling in mountainous and coastal areas. These weather conditions have caused rough seas along the coast, leading to the temporary suspension of some maritime activities.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) recommends that residents and visitors of these provinces stay tuned to official bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas. Authorities are monitoring the weather system's behavior and adjusting alerts as needed.
Tropical Storm Melissa is moving slowly across the Caribbean, generating bands of clouds that are affecting much of the country. Rain is expected to continue for the next few hours, especially in the eastern and northeastern regions. Emergency agencies are coordinating with the tourism sector to ensure the safety of visitors and minimize the impact of the weather on local operations.
