The gestures left by the Petro-Trump meeting: MAGA hat, signed book and praise

SANTO DOMINGO – What began as a meeting to mend a strained bilateral relationship ended up sending a diplomatic signal with broader regional implications. Following their meeting at the White House, US President Donald Trump offered to mediate the conflict between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa .

The gesture became one of the most significant outcomes of the face-to-face meeting between the two leaders, especially at a time when Latin America faces security and cooperation challenges that demand greater political coordination.

The meeting—the first since Trump's return to power—lasted more than two hours and came after weeks of tension between Washington and Bogotá. Petro arrived intending to reaffirm Colombia as a strategic ally in the fight against drug trafficking, while the White House sought to open a new channel of dialogue.

Mediation to reduce tensions in the region

It was Petro himself who revealed that he requested Trump's help to facilitate a "reconciliation" with Noboa and move toward what he described as a possible "triple alliance against drug trafficking ." The Colombian president denied that there is any structural enmity with Ecuador and attributed the tensions to a "ball of disinformation," warning that there are forces interested in fracturing relations between neighboring countries.

The potential US mediation introduces a significant geopolitical element: Washington could assume a more active role in regional stability at a time when cross-border cooperation is crucial for addressing illegal economies and security challenges. Beyond the announcements, the proposal suggests an attempt to transform confrontation into coordination, a shift that could redefine the diplomatic landscape in northern South America.

A discreet meeting, but full of symbolism

Unlike traditional official visits, the meeting took place behind closed doors and without the usual protocol. Even so, subsequent images reflected a more cordial atmosphere than expected.

Petro left smiling and with several souvenirs from the meeting: an autographed copy of Trump: The Art of the Deal , a framed photograph of them together, and a red hat with the slogan “Make America Great Again” (MAGA). The latter detail drew attention given the Colombian president's previous criticisms of sectors of the American right.

In the book's dedication, Trump wrote: " Gustavo, a great honor. I love Colombia ," a message that the South American leader shared on social media with an ironic tone, admitting that he didn't fully understand English.

Energy, security and cooperation: the dialogue agenda

The meeting was attended by high-ranking US officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio , as well as Republican Senator Bernie Moreno , one of Petro's most visible critics.

The talks covered global issues, the role of the United Nations, and current political challenges. Petro also raised the energy transition, noting that regions like La Guajira could become suppliers of clean energy for the continent.

According to the president, this approach would allow for the transformation of territories affected by illegal economies, replacing illicit crops with alternatives such as cacao or coffee. He explained this to Donald Trump.

A gesture that could redefine the relationship

Beyond the symbols and gifts, the offer of mediation emerged as the main political signal of the meeting. Two leaders who have recently clashed publicly opted for dialogue and left the door open to broader cooperation.

The true impact will be measured in the coming months, but the meeting offers an immediate interpretation: Washington seems willing to play a more active role in the regional political architecture, while Bogotá seeks to rebuild alliances.

Because in diplomacy, sometimes the most decisive move is not a signed agreement, but the willingness to intervene to prevent differences from escalating.
