SANTO DOMINGO. -The Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (OPRET) reported that, despite the passage of Tropical Storm Melissa through the national territory, the Santo Domingo Metro service will continue operating on its regular schedule.
This measure responds to the essential nature of the Metro service, facilitating the mobility of citizens who need to travel during this weather situation. The operation will be carried out under established safety protocols and technical supervision, in coordination with the relevant official agencies.
The OPRET Emergency Committee is in permanent session, carrying out preventive actions such as cleaning storm drains, placing sandbags in vulnerable stations and securing construction sites, with the aim of minimizing any impact and maintaining operational safety, the entity highlights in a press release.
It is also noted that the Santo Domingo Cable Car will continue to operate as long as weather conditions allow, always prioritizing the safety of users.
OPRET urges the public to stay informed through its official channels and the bulletins of the Emergency Operations Center (COE) and the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET).
The institution urged residents of provinces under red alert (Santo Domingo, National District, San Cristóbal, Peravia, San José de Ocoa, Azua, San Juan, Barahona, and Pedernales) to remain indoors starting at 1:00 a.m. today, Wednesday, October 22, as recommended by emergency agencies, since the heaviest rainfall associated with the storm is expected at that time. "The recommendation is to limit travel to only what is strictly necessary," it concluded.
