SANTO DOMINGO.- RD se mueve is the megaplan announced last June by the Dominican government, seeking to alleviate traffic congestion, which has become one of the main challenges of Greater Santo Domingo, given the significant increase in the number of vehicles in the country.
One of the key aspects of the plan is the prohibition of left turns on certain critical roads, which experts argue will reduce traffic congestion. This strategy was first implemented yesterday, Sunday, June 6th, on Lope de Vega Avenue, at the intersections of Padre Fantino Falco, Gustavo Mejía Ricart, and Max Henríquez Ureña, in the National District.
The plan is adopted by the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) and the General Directorate of Transit and Land Transportation Safety (Digesett).
At the aforementioned intersection, signs were placed with the restriction "no left turn", in addition to the deployment of uniformed Digesett agents with equipment such as body cameras to offer better supervision and increase the transparency of the operation.
These signs served as a guide to direct drivers to the locations on that road where it is possible to make a U-turn or turn left, as reported this Monday by Listín Diario.
However, during the implementation of this measure, there was little vehicular traffic, so no traffic jams were observed on the roads.
On Lope de Vega Avenue, at the intersections of Padre Fantino Falco, Gustavo Mejía Ricart and Max Henríquez Ureña, the communications director of Digesett, Colonel Rafael Tejeda Baldera, was monitoring the road.
“We will have two weeks of orientation and awareness-raising for drivers to help them adapt to this measure,” explained the colonel, who also indicated that the same strategy will be used in the following stages, noting that sanctions and fines will not be applied at this time.
Alternative routes
To facilitate mobility, given the restriction of the crossings of Lope de Vega with Padre Fantino Falco street, Lope de Vega with Gustavo Mejía Ricart and Lope de Vega with Max Henríquez Ureña street, the transit office arranged other routes as a replacement.
Drivers needing access to Padre Fantino Falco Street from the south of Lope de Vega should turn right onto Gustavo Mejía Ricart Avenue, take Siervas de María Street, and enter Fantino Falco from the east side.
Those heading towards Gustavo Mejía Ricart street in a north-south direction can turn right onto Fantino Falco street, continue along Agustín Lara and then join Mejía Ricart.
For users who want to access Max Henríquez Ureña street, it is recommended to continue along Lope de Vega from south to north until reaching Mejía Ricart, turn right onto Manuel de Jesús Goico Castro street and enter Max Henríquez Ureña from the east.
