SANTO DOMINGO – At first glance, it looks like a landscape from another planet. Lake Natron, located in Tanzania, has intensely red waters that contrast with the sky, creating an image as striking as it is unsettling. But the most surprising thing isn't its color, but what happens to the animals that come into contact with it.
Can a lake turn you to stone?
Lake Natron has extremely high levels of salt and alkalinity. Its water can reach a pH close to that of ammonia, making it a hostile environment for most living things. Furthermore, temperatures can exceed 40°C, further intensifying its extreme conditions.
According to reports from iAgua, some animals that die in the lake become covered in mineral salts that adhere to their bodies, giving them an appearance similar to stone statues. This phenomenon occurs because the sodium carbonate present in the water acts as a natural preservative.
However, not everything is death in this environment. The lake is also home to one of the largest populations of flamingos in the world, which have managed to adapt to these extreme conditions. For them, this ecosystem serves as a safe haven from predators.
The contrast is what makes this place unique: a seemingly lethal environment that, at the same time, sustains life.
Far from being a supernatural phenomenon, Lake Natron is an example of how nature can create extreme conditions and still find ways to balance.
