SANTO DOMINGO. -The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) announced yesterday, Friday, October 24, the temporary closure of the floating bridge that connects the National District with Santo Domingo East.
According to the state agency, the measure aims to allow the free flow of water hyacinths and other organic materials being carried by the Ozama River. Given the low traffic volume in the area at this time, the agency specified that the bridge will remain closed to traffic and its reopening will be announced in due course in coordination with the Digesset (National Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation), the Dominican Navy, and the Military and Police Commission (Comipol).
Minister Eduardo Estrella reiterated his call to the public to avoid unnecessary travel and remain in their homes while the rains persist, always following official guidelines.
He said the Ministry of Public Works has emergency teams and brigades deployed at strategic points in Greater Santo Domingo and other provinces, working on cleaning and removing debris, as well as clearing drainage wells and storm drains in areas prone to flooding. The brigades remain on standby to respond to the various emergencies caused by the weather event.
