SANTO DOMINGO. – Due to ongoing work by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) on the Francisco del Rosario Sánchez bridge (17th Street bridge), heavy vehicle traffic will remain prohibited this Monday, April 21.
The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) reported that the extension of the restriction, which began on April 17, applies to trucks and cargo equipment with three or more axles, and will remain in effect until the completion of the first phase of the bridge intervention, which connects the National District with Santo Domingo East.
These measures are implemented with the aim of ensuring more efficient mobility for all users who travel through this area, as well as facilitating the work of the staff who are working there.
Alternative routes
To prevent traffic congestion, Intrant explained the recommended alternate routes for freight carriers:
From the west (Los Alcarrizos/Santo Domingo Oeste): take the Santo Domingo Ring Road north and then east.
From the north (Santo Domingo Norte): use the Santo Domingo Ring Road heading east.
From the east (Santo Domingo East/Las Américas Highway): take the Circunvalación north and then west.
Authorities assured that the restrictions are properly signposted, and have the support of personnel from the Military and Police Commission (Comipol) and the General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transportation Safety (Digesett), to guide drivers and maintain order.
"It is recommended that vehicles with more than three axles that do not have a circulation permit for the restricted access zone of the National District must use the Santo Domingo ring road to circulate in the DN," states the initial Intrant communiqué.
