SANTO DOMINGO - The Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (OPRET) reported the temporary suspension of operations of the Santo Domingo Metro and Cable Car, after a national blackout on Tuesday afternoon affected the electrical substations that supply both transportation systems.
The information was released through a statement published on the institution's official social media accounts, which explained that the Paraíso and Isabela substations, responsible for supplying power to Metro Lines 1 and 2 and Cable Car Line 1, were taken out of service at 1:25 p.m., following the shutdown of the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI).
According to the information, OPRET immediately activated its emergency protocol , successfully evacuating all passengers who were on board the trains and cable car cabins at the time of the power outage.
“Our operational staff, properly trained, carried out the evacuation work in accordance with established procedures, ensuring that no user was trapped,” the institution stated in the note released on its digital platforms.
The entity also explained that it remains in coordination with the authorities of the electricity sector to restore service as soon as possible, and thanked users for their understanding regarding the inconveniences caused by a situation beyond its control.
As of the closing of this information, technical teams from OPRET were working together with the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) and the Dominican Electric Transmission Company (ETED) to restore power and resume normal operations of the Metro and the Cable Car.
