San Juan de la Maguana will have an airport

Yesterday, Thursday, September 7, 2023, President Luis Abinader inaugurated the construction work on the El Granero del Sur domestic airport in San Juan de la Maguana, which is expected to begin operations in the third quarter of 2024.

Abinader assured that this airport will greatly increase the agricultural productivity of the area, which will have a guaranteed market in Pedernales.

The airport will be built with its own resources, on a plot of land of more than 700,000 square meters, located at kilometer seven of the San Juan de la Maguana-Las Matas de Farfán highway.

“Today, more than the start of the airport's construction, we are laying the groundwork for the development of the entire region,” said Victor Pichardo, director of the Airport Department, after highlighting the government's commitment to bringing development to every corner.

The infrastructure will provide fumigation and agricultural technology services, include general aviation facilities, and offer tourists the province's natural heritage.

Pichardo stated that this is the first time in history that the institution has embarked on the construction of two airports, referring to the construction project of the Cabo Rojo International Airport in Pedernales.

Dock in Barahona

President Abinader also previously broke ground in Barahona for the construction of the cruise ship pier.

The pier project will have an approximate investment of RD$400 million, of which RD$150 million will be executed by the Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM), and another part by the Ministry of Tourism for the area of shops and restaurants.

It is projected to be delivered in 10 months and will be built where loading docks 1 and 2, currently inactive, used to operate.

This restructuring will allow up to two ships to dock simultaneously, attracting thousands of cruise passengers and boosting the economy through job creation and foreign exchange earnings.

“This was a sleeping giant that we are awakening for the good and development of the Dominican Republic. Furthermore, this dock will complement the port being built in Cabo Rojo, allowing the creation of a cruise route,” Abinader stated.

In this destination, visitors can enjoy natural attractions such as Lake Enriquillo, the Magnetic Pole, the larimar mine, and others.

The director of APORDOM, Jean Luis Rodríguez, stated that this transforms the Dominican port system, increasing the number of cruise terminals in the country from 3 to 8 in these three years, during which Taíno Bay was inaugurated in Puerto Plata, Samana Bay Port and Port Cabo Rojo are being built, construction of this dock in Barahona will begin, and the rehabilitation of Arroyo Barril, in Samaná, will be carried out.
