SANTO DOMINGO.- After 9:00 pm yesterday, December 26, members of the Civil Defense reported that the fire that occurred after 5:00 pm at the San Miguel hardware store, located at kilometer 7 of Independencia Avenue, had been 50% extinguished.
"We've had the fire for about four to five hours, and the firefighters already have it 50% under control. As you know, it's a hardware store with a lot of chemical materials, plastics, wood, glues, and things like that, which complicates the firefighters' work a bit. But it's almost 50% under control," Kelvinson Antonio Cáceres, National Coordinator of Brigades for that agency, told CDN.
According to the head of the National District Fire Department, José Luis Frómeta Herasme, the authorities received the report of the incident at 5:50 pm and so far there are no human losses.
Frómeta Herasme said that about 15 units attended the scene to extinguish the flames, that is, 8 tanks and 150 firefighters and with the support of the National Police, Civil Defense, among other entities.
He also indicated that the area's electricity system was suspended in order to ensure the efficiency of the work.
“So far we have the fire contained, we are working to fully control it,” he added.
The area remains under strict supervision while the relevant investigation is carried out.
The causes of the fire at one of the oldest hardware stores in the area known as "Los Kilómetros," where the fire originated, are still unknown.
