SANTO DOMINGO. – The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation ( Intrant) announced that it will conduct more than 10,000 visual vehicle inspections of buses, minibuses, family vehicles, and, for the first time, cargo transport , nationwide, as part of the "Awareness for Life: Safe Christmas and New Year 2025-2026" operation, with the aim of strengthening traffic accident prevention during the Christmas season.
The inspections will be carried out by more than 160 inspectors from the General Inspectorate of Intrant, who will be deployed in the 32 provinces of the country, covering 158 transport companies, public, private and freight transport operators that offer services during this period of high mobility, according to a press release.
He explains that the actions are part of the institutional strategy aimed at guaranteeing minimum safety conditions in transport units that circulate on national roads.
The press release details that as a complementary measure, Intrant will apply 1,000 random doping tests to drivers and chauffeurs of public transport, private transport and cargo, in coordination with the Dominican Red Cross Tránsito+Limpio program , aimed at promoting responsible driving free of substances that compromise road safety.
He adds that during the inspection days, the Intrant inspectors will be accompanied by agents from the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transport (Digesett) , who will proceed in accordance with current regulations in cases where non-compliance with established safety standards is detected.
Regarding the inspection operation
The operation will take place from December 18 to 30 , as part of the preventative measures implemented during the Christmas period, which is characterized by a significant increase in vehicular traffic nationwide. The plan includes a higher number of inspections than in previous Christmas operations, strengthening the reach and capacity of institutional oversight and, for the first time, expanding the scope to include cargo vehicles, given their high volume of intercity traffic during this season, the agency stated.
The operation includes inspecting essential vehicle safety features, such as the proper functioning of the lighting system, tire condition, the state of the rearview mirrors, windows, and bumpers, as well as the availability of mandatory safety equipment, such as warning triangles, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits . Additionally, the inspection will verify that the documentation for both drivers and vehicles is up-to-date and compliant with current regulations .
Intrant specifies that as part of the preventive controls , doping tests, alcohol tests and medical evaluations will be applied to drivers, with the objective of ensuring that transport units, including cargo units, are operated in adequate health and driving conditions.
