SANTO DOMINGO. - On June 11, 2025, Hyatt Hotels Corporation acquired Playa Hotels & Resorts for $2.6 billion, including $900 million of net debt, in a transaction involving 15 all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, including the Hilton La Romana, which will be transformed into two luxury brands: Dreams La Romana (family-friendly) and Secrets La Romana (adults-only).
The acquisition is expected to strengthen luxury tourism in La Romana, attracting high-spending travelers and generating local jobs by integrating the Dreams and Secrets brands into the World of Hyatt program.
The restructuring involves a change in the business model, moving from a general all-inclusive approach to one segmented by guest type, with no evidence or announcement of significant physical works on the properties.
The goal is to align these properties with Hyatt's luxury brands, such as Secrets and Dreams, to capture a market of high-end travelers, which would increase the destination's competitiveness in this segment, boosting the local economy through increased tourist spending.
In February 2025, Hyatt declared its intention to sell $2 billion in real estate assets by 2027, under the asset-light business model, mainly to finance the acquisition and consolidate its all-inclusive resort platform, indicating that the restructuring prioritizes operational and brand optimization over infrastructure investments.
