Afirma has provided housing solutions in the country to more than 1,085 women directly in 2024, 536 of whom were heads or leaders of household.
SANTO DOMINGO – Housing transcends its basic function as shelter, becoming a determining factor in women's identity and self-sufficiency. Adequate housing facilitates harmonious coexistence with neighbors and family, strengthens community ties, and fosters a safe and conducive environment for children's development. But above all, it is an inalienable human right, as emphasized by the United Nations under international law, guaranteeing security of tenure without the threat of eviction. Habitat for Humanity reaffirms its commitment to empowering women in the Dominican Republic by promoting decent housing as a fundamental pillar of their empowerment.
The UN highlights that the main problems women face in accessing housing range from accessibility and affordability to difficulties in obtaining tenure. Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic, aware of this reality, has intensified its efforts to provide housing solutions that promote the comprehensive development of women, directly impacting more than 1,085 in 2024, 536 of whom are heads of household, and recognizing their fundamental role in building a more just and equitable future.
The organization, which has carried out numerous projects in various communities, has focused on providing housing solutions that not only address the housing shortage but also promote social inclusion and the empowerment of women throughout the country. Through training and support, it also fosters women's participation in decision-making and leadership processes within their homes and communities.

“Adequate housing with basic services such as sanitation improves quality of life, reducing gastrointestinal and skin health problems. Women who have access to sanitation facilities within their homes feel safer and more secure when attending to their bodily needs,” explains Cesarina Fabián, national director of Habitat Dominicana.
In 2024, Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic strengthened its commitment to empowering women in key areas for their development. Around 400 women participated in financial literacy and healthy housing programs.
“In 2024, Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic directly impacted the lives of more than 200 women through its programs and services. In addition, more than 200 women entrepreneurs received loans to strengthen their businesses and improve their homes.”.
Fabián points out that Habitat for Humanity's mission in the country is not only to provide housing solutions, but also to strengthen female leadership and promote the active participation of women in the transformation of their communities.
By 2025, the institution aims to expand its reach with the "Floors for Playing" initiative, replacing dirt or damaged floors with concrete floors.
