Eco-Bahia Foundation says it will protect more than 100,000 baby sea turtles in 2024

SANTO DOMINGO - The Eco-Bahia Foundation of Grupo Piñero, founded in Mexico in 1999, highlighted the protection of 101,653 sea turtle hatchlings in Mexico and 1,758 in the Dominican Republic, among the results of the past year.

The organization emphasizes that this milestone has resulted from the monitoring and protection of a total of 1,229 nests — 1,214 in Mexico and 15 in the Dominican Republic.

It highlights that since its creation, the Foundation has recorded the birth of more than 2 million sea turtles on the beaches where it operates, establishing itself as a benchmark in the protection of species such as the loggerhead, green, leatherback and hawksbill turtles.

“This program is the foundational project with which the Eco-Bahía Foundation began its work in 1999 in Mexico. Since then, and after more than two decades of continuous work on the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean, this initiative has become a benchmark in the protection of endangered species. In 2022, the program expanded to the Dominican Republic, where it now operates on strategic beaches in the province of Samaná, as well as in hotel and residential complexes in the east of the country,” the press release states.

The conservation effort covers four of the seven species of sea turtles found worldwide, all of which are classified as endangered. The protocol developed by the Foundation includes accompanying females during the nesting process, monitoring and relocating nests at risk, marking and tracking nests, analyzing hatching rates, and ensuring that the hatchlings reach the sea without interference.

Commitment to biodiversity and environmental education

In addition to its work protecting sea turtles, the Foundation strengthened its efforts in conserving terrestrial ecosystems by donating 2,397 native plants and caring for 1,556 wild specimens. Furthermore, it promoted citizen science with 275 records on the iNaturalist platform, in collaboration with local communities and environmental authorities.

Raising awareness was once again a key focus, with over 13,700 participants in environmental activities. Highlights included eco-tours (3,048 customers), internal training (5,864 employees), and children's initiatives such as the Kids Club (1,098 children), the "After School" program (199 sessions), and school activities with 1,359 students in Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

The Foundation will continue to focus its efforts on three key areas: the protection and regeneration of ecosystems, environmental education, and the strengthening of local communities. With this new brand, it seeks to consolidate and align its actions with Grupo Piñero's sustainability roadmap, reinforcing its role as a catalyst for positive change in the destinations where it operates.
