SANTO DOMINGO. – Competition Week 2025, organized by the National Commission for the Defense of Competition (ProCompetencia), begins today, Monday the 27th, and ends on Friday the 31st of October, focusing its agenda on the challenges of the digital economy and the promotion of open and competitive markets in the Dominican Republic.
The meeting will bring together national and international experts from the public, private and academic sectors, including representatives from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the OECD, to discuss transparency, innovation and regulation in local and global markets.
The opening event will feature the participation of ProCompetencia's president, María Elena Vásquez Taveras, along with specialists Mario Umaña (IDB) and Paulo Burnier (OECD). During the event, the panel “Transparency, Public Procurement, and Competition: A Necessary Synergy” will be presented, along with the Guide for the Prevention and Detection of Collusion in Public Procurement, designed to strengthen efficiency in public spending.
On Tuesday, declared National Competition Day, Vásquez Taveras will present her report on her administration's performance between October 2024 and October 2025, together with the Vice Minister of Domestic Trade, Ramón (Monchy) Pérez Fermín. The ProCompetencia App, a digital platform that will facilitate access to the institution's services and publications, will also be launched.
Sectors such as el inmobiliario and construction benefit directly from this agenda, as the adoption of digital platforms and the implementation of clear regulatory frameworks promote transparency in bidding processes, efficiency in project management, and equitable access to market opportunities, strengthening competitiveness and fostering innovation in a key area for the country's economic development.
The closing event will be the First International Congress on Competition Law, Digital Markets, and Free Competition, which will address topics such as digital platforms, artificial intelligence, regulatory convergence, and data protection. Participants include William Kovacic (George Washington University), Marianela López-Galdos (Meta), and local authorities such as José Ignacio Paliza and Guido Gómez Mazara.
The third edition of the Yearbook on Free Competition, focusing on digital markets, will be presented during the congress. With these activities, ProCompetencia reaffirms its commitment to a more innovative, competitive, and transparent economic ecosystem, promoting free competition as an engine of sustainable development in the Dominican Republic.
