Santo Domingo. - Instead of issuing an ultimatum to companies that have irregularly employed foreign workers to regularize their status, the Government should force employers not to hire employees in an irregular situation, says the National Confederation of Trade Union Unity.
“That way, irregular labor is discouraged,” Rafael Pepe Abreu pointed out, indicating that this can only be achieved with efficient inspection by the Ministry of Labor.
Regarding the regularization process, he demanded greater ease, as the obstacles in the procedures are delaying those interested.
For his part, the president of the Dominican Association of Housing Builders and Developers (Acoprovi), Jorge Montalvo, while considering the measure positive, maintained that the process needs to be streamlined.
“The government should announce a simplified immigration legalization process, and that way the process can be easier,” the executive stated.
He argued that three months might be too short a time for companies to regulate their foreign workers.
He stated that the measure by the National Migration Council must be accompanied by a streamlining of the regularization processes.
He noted that of the 390,000 jobs generated by that sector, approximately 20% are held by foreign workers.
Regarding the number of foreigners in this situation, both entities stated that they do not have specific figures, as there is still no accurate data on how many foreigners are undocumented.

As of July, 30,251 foreign workers are registered in the Dominican Social Security System, and of these, some 15,751 are of Haitian nationality and 2,834 of Venezuelan nationality.
