The executive director of the Airport Department (DA), Víctor Pichardo , led a meeting with provincial authorities and prominent community leaders from the Barranca area, in San Juan de la Maguana, where they learned extensively about the project and the development opportunities that the El Granero del Sur in the province.
During the meeting, community leaders expressed to Pichardo and Governor Ana María Castillo their recognition of the significant impact the project will have on both Barranca and San Juan in general. However, they voiced concerns about issues such as the condition of streets and roads, bridge repairs, and the construction of sidewalks and curbs.
Meanwhile, when addressing those present, Pichardo highlighted the empowerment shown by the entire Barranca community in monitoring the work on the El Granero del Sur Airport, especially by the younger generation.
Pichardo reported that the first thing that was envisioned at the start of the work was the widening of the road that borders the airfield grounds, as well as its readjustment and paving.
“We thank these authorities who have been present today, showing that Barranca is important to each of them. Thank you to each of these community members who have been present,” said Soribel Montero Alcántara, director of the José Altagracia Sánchez Educational Center in that community.
“I have been a community leader since I was born, and I am 73 years old. I have been tireless in my community, and that is why we are here today giving thanks to God for these authorities who honor the community with their presence. I believe that God will give us an opportunity here today, and you will not do so through words, but with proven actions,” said Benjamín Canario.
“This is an airport that will bring sustainable economic development to the entire community,” Pichardo insisted after announcing that he had already coordinated with the Ministry of Public Works, which approved five kilometers of asphalt for the road that connects the community of Barranca , and that the same number of kilometers are being managed to continue the work in the area.
“But it doesn’t stop there, because Barranca’s problem isn’t just asphalt and roads, but also training, employment, and social support. And for this reason, we are coordinating training courses for young people in airport-related fields, as well as a community outreach event coordinated by the DA.”

The El Granero del Sur Domestic Airport continues to progress according to schedule, with eighty percent of the runway paved, and one hundred percent of the priming completed in the parking lot, taxiway, and other areas.
In addition, work is underway on the redesign of the second level of the terminal building. Similarly, work is progressing rapidly on the building that will house members of the Dominican Air Force.
Also speaking at the meeting were Governor Ana María Castillo, the local mayor Pedro Encarnación Jeremías, the agricultural leader Manuel Matos, the provincial director of Public Works, Julio Rosario, and others, who praised the positive impact the project will have on the province.
