This is the underground Cold War bunker converted into a three-story house

An underground bunker built during the Cold War to protect against missile attacks has been put up for sale with the intention of converting it into a home. The small building, located in Kansas, USA, was listed for US$320,000 in 2022.

The underground shelter was used to store intercontinental ballistic missiles in the 1960s. The bunker is located on a 4.4-hectare property and has several levels below the ground surface.

This site was abandoned by the United States Air Force after the 1960s and features an underground Launch Control Center and a tunnel leading to a 57-meter-deep missile silo. Today, it's been converted into a three-story underground house and the All Things Atlas Library, which also offers stays through Airbnb while awaiting its new owner.

For several years, the former owners worked on converting the old bunker into a habitable house and putting it up for sale. Now, with the recent renovations, the decor blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The property is nestled amidst farmland with views of a regional wind farm.

As highlighted, the bunker's interior offers basic amenities such as running water, electricity, and a sewage system, as well as internet access. The master bedroom is adjacent to the kitchen, and the main bathroom is shared. The house also features two single beds, a 55" 4K Roku TV, a 4K UltraHD Blu-ray player, a remote-controlled ceiling fan, and a desk with two chairs.

This site, also known as the former Atlas F missile silo complex, was unfurnished for several months and to get it ready, renovations were carried out, such as painting and repairing details on the walls.

The listing published by Hirsch Real Estate, the agency handling the sale, states that the property "can be used as a residential building, for offices, or for merchandise storage." "These facilities have great potential for any purpose. Whether it's a house, apartments, or a bed and breakfast,  these are just a few ideas," they note. However, the app allows users to see the newly renovated interior of the property.

As highlighted, this area was used as a launch control center and also housed the crew during the Cold War. Furthermore, the main missile silo is located 52 meters below the entrance. The bunker's defining characteristics in the advertisement, as expected, are its security and exclusivity, and the asking price is US$320,000.

The bunker was painted in colors reminiscent of the original Airbnb colors. The owners also claim that a primitive campground is operating nearby, open to tourists. According to the description, the site is located just minutes from the old saloon and local restaurants in the town of Wilson. Furthermore, just a few miles away is Lake Wilson, one of the largest and cleanest lakes in Kansas, where visitors can enjoy water sports and epic mountain biking trails.

The bunker has three floors in total that have been rebuilt to be used as housing.
