Reprehensible violence

Every day we receive with horror the news from social networks and the media reporting regrettable events in which human beings die as victims of the violence that plagues Dominican society.

Regardless of social class, age, or gender, crime continues to lurk and take over the streets, preying on young, innocent, valuable, hardworking people—useful assets who unfairly pay for a deficient system that lacks guarantees for its citizens.

Life seems to have lost its meaning; triggers are pulled as if it were a game, where human beings are hunted for sport. The situation is alarming, and the fears expressed by the population are undeniable; violence engulfs our streets every day.

Many Leslies lose their lives daily as a consequence of the ruthless savagery that, without regard for borders, descends upon entire families, whose heartbreaking scenes horrify and undermine the tranquility of even the most insensitive person.

It is true that some cases transcend more than others, some get more headlines, but ultimately they are human beings who are extinguished amidst reprehensible violence, leaving a trail of suffering, pain, guilt complexes, impotence, disorders and irreparable emotional damage.

The bleeding must stop now. The State, as guarantor of public policies, is called upon to address the root causes of this rampant evil. The police mindset must be transformed and renewed, leaving behind its archaic methods, where the easiest and most frequent solution is often to shoot without hesitation.

Unbalanced and corrupt minds that pose a danger to the population should not carry weapons or represent state security forces. This society deserves a better future.

Orphanhood pervades everything. Not only the orphanhood suffered by the sons and daughters of fathers and mothers who leave us prematurely due to fatal violence; but also the orphanhood of a population without security or guarantees, one that finds death while fleeing in terror from criminals and police because, in the end, the cure is worse than the disease.
