SANTO DOMINGO. – The Central Bank reported that remittances reached US$8,675.1 million , an amount US$2,035.7 million higher than that reached in the same period of 2020, registering a 30.7% year-on-year growth and exceeding the same period of 2019 , the year prior to the pandemic .
In a statement sent to the media, the agency specified that in October 2021 remittances received reached a figure of US$813.8 million , exceeding by US$24.2 million those registered in October 2020.
The institution highlighted that this value exceeded by US$233.5 million, or 40.2%, the remittances received in October 2019, the year prior to the pandemic.
The total received up to October in 2021 exceeded the US$8,219.2 million received in the entire year of 2020 by more than US$450 million , with two months still remaining in the year.
The Central Bank explains that the continued improvement in the economic conditions of the United States (USA) is one of the main factors that continues to influence the behavior of remittances, since 83.9% of the flows in October came from that country.
It notes that the recovery of that economy is reflected in employment in that country, especially after the creation of 531,000 new jobs in October. Consequently, the unemployment rate fell 0.2% compared to September, reaching 4.6% at the end of October. Specifically, unemployment among Hispanics in the US dropped to 5.9% in October from 6.3% in September. Tags: Remittances, Central Bank
