Between January and August 2021, remittances received by families in the Dominican Republic totaled US$7,031.7 million, equivalent to US$1,959.2 million more than the same period in 2020.

The amount received in the first months of the year represents a year-on-year increase of 38.6%, according to figures from the Central Bank. March, April, and May saw the highest monthly amounts.

Despite the economic blow dealt by the pandemic lockdown, remittances received last year, although lower than those received this year, exceeded those of the first eight months of 2019 (which were US$4,726.1 million), at a time when COVID-19 was not a topic of discussion.

The United States remains the leading source of remittances, given that it is home to the largest diaspora community. Between January and August 2021, it accounted for 85% of the total received. Spain was the second largest source, with 6.7%.

In August 2021 alone, the country received US$872.0 million in family remittances, a 13.3% increase compared to the same month in 2020, equivalent to US$102.1 million, according to a preliminary economic report from the Central Bank .
