SANTO DOMINGO. – The presidents of the Dominican Federation of Merchants, Iván García, and of the Dominican Confederation of Micro, Small and Medium Construction Companies (Copymecon), Eliseo Cristopher, supported the proposal by 28 senators to eliminate tax exemptions for all industries, and assured that in this way large companies would compete on equal terms with small ones.
García questions why many of the tax exemptions are intended to lower prices for consumers, but that reduction isn't actually being applied. To compete on a level playing field, he believes it's necessary to eliminate them all . He lamented that diesel, for example, is sold to some companies for RD$50 less.

The president of Copymecon considered that, although some sectors need them, most of the beneficiaries of tax exemptions only use them for their own personal enrichment.
He criticized the fact that his sector pays taxes in the same way as large companies, while the latter enjoy special exemptions granted in different laws.
Christopher applauded the proposal, but does not believe it will pass in Congress because "it affects many interests.".
The Senate on Tuesday approved in its first reading the bill that repeals all tax exemptions and exonerations for legislators themselves.
The statements were made during a breakfast meeting with the Dominican Federation of Merchants on the occasion of its 47th anniversary, which was attended by President Luis Abinader.
