Government reports progress in the process of recovering and reorganizing Sosúa beach

SANTO DOMINGO. – The Dominican government announced this Wednesday that it is continuing the process of cleaning up and recovering Sosúa beach , through the demolition of empty and previously notified , which were located within the 60 meters of beach that the law establishes as non-buildable.

The Executive Unit for the Readjustment of Neighborhoods and Environments (URBE), attached to the Ministry of the Presidency , indicated that in 2021 it began the process of surveying and registering the 208 commercial premises within the 60 meters of the beach.

The press release highlights that, prior to the start of the demolition process, several meetings were held with community members in the area to understand their needs , as well as to learn about the types of businesses located within the affected perimeter.

The program is within the framework of the Sosúa Beach Recovery and Reorganization Project , developed by the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur).

“On July 24 of this year, the first checks were distributed to merchants who opted for financial compensation , and the first demolitions of vacated structures took place. To date, more than 30 commercial spaces have been assigned, 20 financial compensations have been paid, and 6 structures have been demolished. The survey identified 30 empty structures , which are now being demolished with the collaboration of the Ministry of the Environment and the National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA) , after the owners were duly notified. This marks an important step in the recovery of this vital natural resource ,” he notes.

The project to recover and clean up this coast is being carried out under a working alliance between the Executive Unit for the Readaptation of Neighborhoods and Environments (URBE) , the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) , the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the National Environmental Protection Service (Senpa) , in collaboration with the National Navy, the National Police, Politur and the Government of Puerto Plata , in addition to the participation of the Mayor's Office  of the municipality of Sosúa .

The project aims to conserve and revitalize the coastline, boost tourism, and generate more income for residents . To achieve these goals, it includes the clearing and relocation of businesses in the area and the construction of two open plazas, which will ensure the protection of the beach and the safety of merchants, tourists, and residents.

This initiative is part of the comprehensive plan for the recovery and improvement of public spaces on the Dominican coast , in order to guarantee the preservation of natural resources and enhance the well-being of the sector.
