Dominican Association of Airlines reaffirms the strength of the national aeronautical sector

The Dominican Association of Airlines ( ADLA ) expressed its solidarity yesterday with the crew and passengers who experienced a terrifying ordeal last Tuesday when a Red Air plane crashed at Miami International Airport (MIA). “ADLA expresses its solidarity with the crew and passengers of the crashed plane and reiterates that the member airlines of our association fully comply with local and international regulations that ensure the safety and integrity of our operations,” said Omar Chahin Lama, president of the association.

Dominican Republic authorities urged to maintain aviation category one

Although the country has a low incidence of serious air accidents, experts recommend evaluating aircraft safety protocols to prevent new incidents and maintain the technical oversight standards that have allowed the country to achieve Category 1 status for travel to the U.S., the primary destination for flights departing from the Dominican Republic. In the last four years, from 2018 to 2021, there have been approximately 16 air accidents or incidents involving around 45 people, 23 of whom lost their lives.

Cost of raw materials is the primary factor affecting competitiveness

The cost of raw materials, maritime and land transport, and the tax burden emerged as the three factors that most affected competitiveness in the first quarter of 2022 (January-March), according to the Industrial Outlook Survey, which establishes the "Index of Impact on Factors Affecting Competitiveness." This survey was conducted by the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD). The "cost of raw materials" remained in first place for the sixth consecutive quarter (it was the leading factor in October-December 2020, after consistently rising in importance from fourth place in April-June 2020 to second place in July-September 2020 and first place in the second quarter of October-December 2020). This indicator showed an impact of 31%.

The Metro and Cable Car generate more than 6 million pesos daily

From 6:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., the Santo Domingo Metro-Cable Car integrated transportation system carries an average of 316,806 passengers daily, who pay RD$20 per trip, for a total revenue of RD$6,336,120 per day. This popular mode of transportation, inaugurated in January 2009 by then-President Leonel Fernández, was projected to transport at least 175,000 users across the first 16 stations of Line 1.

The Dominican government is already applying the zero tariff law to 67 tariff subheadings

The General Directorate of Customs (DGA) reported that since June 7, 2022, the Dominican Government has been implementing Law 6-22, which provisionally imposes a zero rate on customs duties for certain goods that affect the cost of basic food items in the Dominican Republic.

Amazon's empire at risk from an Indian initiative

India is seeking to end the exclusive power held by a few companies in the e-commerce sector, such as Amazon, by replacing the traditional vision of a website managed by an intermediary with an open network that welcomes buyers, sellers, and distributors without third-party interests. Doing something different from what the big companies have been doing is the only way to increase these figures, according to those in charge of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) project. They say it will democratize the sector by facilitating the transition to online commerce for small businesses, giving them the same visibility as larger companies. E-commerce in India was already projected to reach $74.5 billion in revenue by the end of this year.

The construction of the Metro affects the Las Mercedes school in the Enriquillo neighborhood

The Las Mercedes school, in the Enriquillo neighborhood of Herrera, in the municipality of Santo Domingo Oeste, was the site where displaced residents reached an agreement to set up the camp for the underground section of Metro Line 2-C. However, it has not benefited from the investment in the area. Its stairs are broken, and its perimeter fence is unprotected, so thieves frequently break in and steal everything they can, including two water pumps, a gas tank, and a blender.

Tunnel of the Americas, dirty and dangerous for months

The Las Américas and Charles de Gaulle tunnels have not been maintained for months and are filthy, with leaks, dark patches, and missing grates in the storm drain system, posing a danger to drivers. Carbon monoxide residue from vehicles is stuck to the walls, whose white tiles are darkened and some have fallen off. The tunnel lacks adequate lighting to ensure driver safety, forcing many to turn on their headlights.

Abinader will only visit Puerto Plata and Samaná this weekend

The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, will only travel to the provinces of Puerto Plata and Samaná this weekend, where he will complete a work agenda that includes the inauguration of works, groundbreaking ceremonies, delivery of Supérate cards and lunch with young people, the Presidency reported.

APAP is certified for its safety standards for the third time
